Essential Oils
Bergamot, Citrus bergamia
This restorative oil from the cold pressed peel of the fruit of the Bergamot Orange tree combats stress and fatigue. The deep green oil refreshes and relaxes, and like many other oils of the citrus family has an astonishing ability to lift low moods and vivify the spirit. The sweet smelling oil is deodorising, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and an excellent natural stimulant in caring for skin cells and hair follicles. Reputed to assist healing of acne, abscesses, cold sores, itching, psoriasis, anxiety, depression, stress. As bergamot oil may cause photosensitivity, it should be diluted and used with care, and is often recommended to be avoided by pregnant women.
Black Pepper, Piper nigrum
Essential oil of Black Pepper has a spicy, sharp, aroma and is at once comforting, energising and fortifying. Relieves fatigue and burn-out. Highly anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral, lowers blood-pressure, and may have anti-cancer properties. Reported ability to reduced cigarette cravings, and is reputed to relieve aches and pains, aid digestion, detoxify the body, lower cholesterol, enhance circulation. Possible skin irritant, patch test small area for sensitivity, and avoid contact with eyes and sensitive areas.
Roman Chamomile, Chamaemelum nobile
Traditionally used by the Ancient Egyptians, and in Greece and Rome to cure fevers, the feathery leaves and dainty white flowers of this perennial herb have a versatile range of healing qualities. Chamomile is particularly renowned as a powerful anti-inflammatory soother, and is excellent in the treatment of sensitive and problematic skin. Avoid during pregnancy or breast-feeding.
Blue German Chamomile, Matricaria chmomilla
Carminative, analgesic, antiallergenic, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic. Helpful for soothing irritation, impatience, anger, useful in treatment of allergies, helps relieve hay fever and asthma, helps balance PMS. Ultra soothing for mood and emotions, and studies indicate Blue German Chamomile may have anti-cancer properties. Avoid or check with your doctor before use during pregnancy.
Cinnamon Bark, Cinnamomum cassia
Extracted from the bark of the tall, tropical, evergreen cinnamon tree. Used in the Far East for thousands of years, this warm and spicy antiseptic oil has a therapeutic effect on the immune and circulatory systems. Treating chills and improving circulation, cinnamon oil is a supportive aid during outbreaks of cold and flu. Possible skin sensitivity, use with caution. Check with doctor before use if pregnant or breast feeding.
Clary Sage, Salvia Sclaria
Native to the North Mediterranean Basin, this beautiful herb has large purple flowers that emanate a scent reminiscent of pineapple. The clean and refreshing oil gathered from its flowering tops and foliage is a muscle relaxant that offers pain relief, and helps treat conditions related to the female reproductive system and imbalances of the menstrual cycle. An excellent aid to uterine contractions during the active labour stage of childbirth, however avoid during pregnancy or breast-feeding.
Clove, Syzygium aromaticum
The warm, invigorating, and comforting oil of clove buds is anti-inflammatory antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal. Containing the chemical eugenol, an antibacterial and anaesthetic agent, clove oil can be inhaled or used topically to assist in treating respiratory conditions, assist digestive upset, and relieve pain in the muscles and joints.
Cypress, Cupressus sempervirens
From the wood, leaves, and cones of the magnificent evergreen Cypress tree comes a woody, spicy essential oil. Once planted in the burial grounds of the ancient Greeks and Romans, in the past it has been medicinally used to treat whooping cough, oily skin and cellulite, and its hemostatic properties gave assistance in the treatment of haemorrhages and excessive bleeding. Cypress tree oil is grounding, restorative, toning and soothing.
Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus globulus
A fresh, camphorous, powerfully antibacterial oil from the tree and leaves of the native eucalyptus trees of Australia. When used in inhalations or combined in a carrier blend, eucalyptus oil is a potent expectorant highly effective in the relief of congestion in colds and chest infections.
Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare
Steam-distilled from the crushed seeds of the fennel plant, fennel oil is fortifying and energising. Roman soldiers were said to consume fennel before battle to increase their strength and courage. Fennel has strong estrogenic properties, and so may help alleviate menstrual symptoms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve menopausal symptoms. Fennel should be avoided in pregnancy. Native to the Mediterranean, this evergreen perennial plant has been used in culinary practice for many years for its distinctive liquorice-like flavour and aroma.
Frankincense, Boswellia carterii
Native to Somalia, and traditionally used by the Ancient Egyptians, Frankincense has achieved world-wide fame for it’s cosmetically rejuvenating properties. It has also been used medicinally in the Far East, and as incense in India and China. The spicy, exotic, and valuable oil is derived from the gum resin found in the bark of the Frankincense tree, and has a toning, anti-aging effect on mature skin. Highly versatile, the antibacterial and antiviral properties of Frankincense make it useful in treating chest problems, coughs, colds, and flu, while it’s calming properties aid in reducing anxiety, tension, and stress. An all-round miracle oil!
Geranium, Pelargonium graveolens
The strongly scented sweet flowers and leaves of the Geranium shrub have been harvested as a healing plant for treating wounds, tumors, insect bites, and for its regulating effect on the delicately balance female hormone system to treat premenstrual tension and menopausal problems. Its astringent qualities are beneficial for all skin types, and its analgesic properties offer pain relief for many irritating skin conditions. While non-toxic and safe for topical application it is recommended to use with caution on sensitive skin.
Ginger, Zingiber officinale
The warm, spicy oil extracted from ginger rhizomes was believed by the Persians to be an aphrodisiac with the power to enhance the libido. In more recent times, studies have shown ginger oil to be an anti-inflammatory agent containing antioxidants such as phytochemicals, polyphenols, tannins, and terpenes. Its therapeutic uses include the treatment of muscle cramps, joint pain and swelling, digestive problems, and nausea caused by motion sickness, pregnancy, food poisoning, and medications.
Grapefruit, Citrus paradisi
Originating in Asia and the West Indies, the grapefruit tree and citrus rind yield an energising, sharp, and refreshing essential oil. Its cooling antiseptic qualities cleanse the lymphatic system, support the liver, help treat oily skin, and break up mucous to alleviate symptoms of cold and flu. Take care not to use before sun exposure as this oil may cause photosensitivity.
Juniper, Juniperus communis
The bush and berries of this evergreen coniferous shrub offer a fresh, woody scent and has been traditionally used to give gin its distinctive flavour. Growing in many parts of the world, the juniper plant is a powerful eliminator of toxins, and has valued in Greece, Rome, Arabia, and Tibet as an antiseptic, and used to combat typhoid, cholera, and the plague.
Lavender, Lavandula angustifolia
The most versatile of all essential oils, lavender, is famous for its relaxing, sedative properties, and its ability to relive stress, anxiety, and nervous tension. Widely used around the world for millennia, the Romans used the light, floral oil of this evergreen perennial plant and its beautiful blue-mauve flowers for bathing and cleansing wounds. The name ‘lavender’ comes from the Latin lavare, meaning “to wash”, and indeed lavender oil, both antiseptic and mildly analgesic, is helpful as a first-aid remedy for many different skin problems, for relaxing the muscles, resetting the mind, and offering relief for migraines and headaches.
Lemon, Citrus limonum
The fresh, stimulating and cleansing oil of both the lemon’s fruit and rind has antiseptic qualities that boost the circulation system, clarify the skin, and cleanse the lymphatic system. Native to India, and brought from the Middle East by the Crusaders on their return to Europe, lemon fruit and their essential oil help ward off all kind of infections ranging from insect bites and associated malaria to the common cold and flue.
Lemongrass, Cymbopogon citratus
Highly antiseptic, lemongrass is useful in protecting against airbourne pathogens. Steam-distilled from the grass and leaves of both the West Indian and East Indian species, this sweet, sharp, and lemony essential oil has antidepressant, pain-relieving properties, is thought to help bring down fevers, and is helpful in treating sore or strained muscles.
Mandarin, Citrus reticulata
Mandarin citrus rind has a sweet, delicately tangy aroma that is soothes and strengthens digestive function, improves mood and uplifts the spirit. More gentle than other citrus oils, mandarin is a favourite for soothing restless children due to its calming, antispasmodic effect. Avoid contact with skin 2-3 hours before sunlight exposure as may cause photosensitivity.
Marjoram, Origanum majorana
The flower heads and leaves of this herb yield a strong sweet herbaceous aroma. Native to North Africa, Egypt, and the Mediterranean, marjoram has been used for culinary purposes, traditional folk remedies, cosmetics, perfumes, and medicines. Offering warmth and comfort, marjoram oil can be used to treat sore muscles, digestive ailments, and sleeping problems.
Patchouli, Pogostemon cablin
This powerful, earthy oil originating in the Far East has been traditionally used in the ancient Eastern lands for scenting cloth and linen, and medicinally used in China, Malaysia, and Japan as an antidote to snake and insect bites. The ancient belief in its ability to prevent disease is grounded in its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and antidepressant properties. This versatile oil is also excellent for meditation due to its relaxing effect, and can also be an aphrodisiac.
Palmarosa, Cymbopogon martinii
This rosy, floral oil extracted from the grass and leaves of the palmarosa plant native to India and Pakistan is an all-round balancer and strengthener of the nervous system, reducing stress, tension, and anxiety. Its antiviral, cooling and toning properties make it an excellent oil for skin support for all skin types.
Peppermint, Mentha piperita
Native to Europe and familiar favourite of the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, the refreshing and invigorating oil of peppermint leaves and flowers has been used for millennia to relieve headaches, migraines, and sleep disturbance. The Romans used it to clam digestion after overindulgent feasting, and it remains a powerful digestive aid today in treating digestive ailments, bloating, and irritable bowel syndrome. Its powerfully refreshing scent also helps to clear the mind and banish nausea. Use in dilution and avoid with heart ailments.
Pine, Pinus sylvestris
A strong antiseptic, the refreshing forest scent of pine oil has a cleansing and clearing effect on the respiratory system, helps alleviate sinus infections, and can clear mental fatigue and nervous tension. Traditionally associated with religious ceremonies, the oil collected from pine needles and cones of Scottish and Norwegian pine trees clears energetic stagnation and resets auric fields. Use with caution, may irritate sensitive skin.
Rose Geranium, Pelargonium graveolens
Steam-distilled from the soft pink flowers of the geranium plant native to North Africa, this luscious essential oil carries the sweet, floral scent of roses and offers powerful anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-aging properties.
Rose Otto, Rosa damascena
Originating in Persia, Rose Otto is the ‘Queen’ of essential oils, bringing physical balance, emotional stability, and mental clarity. Excellent for improving skin complexion Rose Otto cools inflammation, heals broken capillaries and prevents skin damage and aging. This revered ancient oil attained from the plant’s flower and petals also relives depression, headaches, and nervous tension, and has a clearing and healing effect on the female reproductive system.
Rose Centifolia, Rosa centifolia
Another Queen in the realm of skincare, Rosa Centifolia is a versatile oil for all skin types. With antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-aging properties, this luscious floral mother-oil nourishes, moisturises, and soothes the skin while healing wounds and scars, and protecting from harsh elements.
Rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis
Considered sacred by ancient civilisations and beloved by bees, who adore the beautiful blue blossoms of this restorative plant, rosemary treats respiratory infections, afflictions of the nervous system and treats hormone imbalance. Used in medicine, food, and magical ceremonies for many centuries, rosemary also aids memory, concentration, and fatigue.
Rosewood, Aniba rosaeodora
Growing in the rainforests of Brazil, the sweet dusky oil of rosewood is distilled from the heartwood of the tree. Helpful in balancing all systems, rosewood can relieve headaches, stress, calm the central nervous system, and boost the immune and respiratory systems. Recommended for stabilising emotions.
Sandalwood, Santalum spicatum
Originating in southern Asia, this sweet and spicy exotic oil is distilled from the bark and heartwood of the sandalwood tree. Important in Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic therapy, sandalwood is mentioned in ancient Sanskrit and Chinese manuscripts, the aromatic wood used to carve deities and temples, and the oil used in religious ritual and sacred rites. A powerful relaxant, sandalwood oil will soothe the nervous and skeletal-muscular systems, reduce inflammation in the respiratory system, and clear excess mucous and infection. It is also said to hold aphrodisiac properties that increase the male libido.
Spearmint, Mentha spicata
Traditionally popular in Mediterranean regions, spearmint was documented by the Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder for its digestive benefits. Sweeter and more gentle than its cousin peppermint, the cleansing and refreshing oil extracted from spearmint leaves is used for its antimicrobial properties in treating headaches, digestive issues, muscle aches and pains, dental health, and for clearing brain fog and reducing stress.
Tea Tree, Melaleuca alternifolia
Native to New South Wales, Australia, this powerful antiseptic oil has been extracted from crushed leaves for medicinal use by Indigenous Australians for millennia. This astringent, woody oil is an excellent first-aid resource for its germicidal, fungicidal, and antibacterial properties, and an effective all-purpose cleaning agent. This oil is non-toxic but may cause irritation to sensitive skin and pets.
Thyme, Thymus vulgaris
The fresh, herbaceous oil collected from the flowers and leaves of the Thyme plant has been therapeutically utilised throughout recorded history as far back as the Sumerians, around 3, 5000 BCE. The Egyptians used it for embalming, and the Greeks and Romans used it for both cooking and medicine. A warming, anti-bacterial cleanser, thyme oil helps relieve joint pain, arthritis, back pian, and sciatica. Thyme oil stimulates while blood cell production and helps fight off infections. Avoid sensitive or damaged skin, and ensure to dilute >1% in baths.
Vetiver, Vetiveria zizanioides
A tall perennial grass growing in sub-tropical Asia, the calming and sedating properties of Vetiver oil give rise to its reputation as the ‘oil of tranquillity.’ Distilled from the roots, this woody, earthy oil is ideal for calming massage, baths, and treatment of acne and other skin ailments. Helpful for stimulating circulation and alleviating muscular pains and liver congestion, this soothing, grounding oil is also supportive for anxiety and balancing emotions.
Ylang-ylang, Cananga odorata
Originating in the Philippines, the sweet and heavy ylang-ylang, the name meaning ‘flower of flowers,’ now graces all tropical Asia with its sensual blooms and exotic scent. Famous for hydrating the skin for a youthful appearance, ylang-ylang oil extracted from the leaves, flowers, and buds relaxes the mind and emotions, and balances blood pressure and heart rate. An incredible adaptogen, Ylang-ylang will calm and create a sense of well-being while its aphrodisiac properties open the heart and activate libido in both men and women. Use well-diluted and avoid with inflammatory skin conditions.

Why use a Carrier Oil?
Diluting essential oils makes them safer to use to use directly on the skin.
Using a carrier oil helps your essential oils last much longer, as pure essential oils evaporate quickly.
Carrier oils help extend your use of essential oils, less is often more.
Carrier oils are more deeply absorbed into the skin and help deliver essential oils more deeply and efficiently.
Different carrier oils have varied shelf-lives. We use the best quality fresh ingredients available and the longest-lasting carrier oils in our products. The high concentrations of essential oils in our products also help to preserve the base oils that carry them. Our Balm Blends will have a shelf-life of at least 2 years, and our Oil Blends will have a shelf-life of approximately 1-2 years.*
